Hearing God's Voice whisper YWAM Madison DTS Youth With a mission discipleship training school

The God Who Whispers

One of my favorite toys as a kid was this retro little phone. It was the one you pull around on a string and when you called on it you heard this cute prerecorded message. Now this is kinda how I viewed talking with God for most of my childhood and into my teen years. I believed you just somehow got this right combination of being without any sin and being very wise. Then when you talked to God He would respond right away in this prerecorded message that told you to not do whatever you were planning to do or to go left instead of right.

During my first week of DTS, we spent a couple days learning to hear God’s voice. I kept waiting for my Karate Kid moment. You know the one where the speaker said here’s the four steps to hearing God’s voice. Then I would go practice in the corn fields. And boom, there would be God. But I ran into a minor problem when that was not how it happened at all.

The speaker told great stories and referenced Bible verses and told us it would just happen. And so I “waited” for something to happen, for God to speak through a burning bush or a a fierce angel. But nothing happened. And so I kept waiting…

Then, one day another speaker from our DTS said something I will never forget. He said, “God speaks to you in the way you can hear.” Now this was a revolutionary concept for me! I had been waiting for this crazy interaction with God’s audible voice. But I slowly began to realize that it was a lot more like a little whisper.

I was drawn to a passage in 1 Kings 19 where God reveals Himself to Elijah in four ways. The first three were powerful — a mighty wind, an earthquake and a roaring fire. But God was not in any of them. Instead, God spoke with a “gentle whisper.”

All along, I had been looking for the God of the mighty wind or the earthquake. But finally, I was seeing that God is so much more gentle than that. He’s intimate and close. I found Him speaking to me through encouraging words or special moments during worship. I realized He had always been talking. I just wasn’t listening for the right thing. His voice isn’t a prerecorded message or booming thunder. He is the God who whispers.
