Peer to Peer

Do not let anyone look down on you because you are youngAs I walked up the street from Walgreens in San Francisco, my path crossed with a young Discipleship Training School (DTS) student who had been in our class. Since my team and I are teaching in his DTS, our conversation turned to the week’s lectures. I was surprised to learn his age — he’s 21, a year younger than I am.

I’m pretty young as far as teachers go, and I had received a lot of feedback from people about my age as I prepared to teach. Some thought it was great but others were concerned that it could be challenging for me to teach students so close to my age–or even older than I am. It made me a little nervous, too. But what I heard from Ben that day encouraged me so much.

Ben said, “I like having teachers around my age or even my age, because, while guest speakers who are older are great to hear from, the younger speakers relate to me more personally. It puts us on the same level quicker than that feeling would come with an older teacher.”

It’s important to not let age–whether young or old–stop you from the mission God has prepared for you!

“Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.” 1 Timothy 4:12
