This was not at all what we expected. We were supposed to be ministering at an orphanage. But when those plans fell through, we found ourselves on the streets of Morelia, inviting the homeless to join us for hot chocolate, bread, and our street performance.
Rachel and I walked up to an older lady. Our simple “hola” seemed to open the floodgates to her entire life story. She talked so fast that our translator couldn’t even tell us what she was saying. But, based on our limited Spanish, we could tell she was very angry. Some horrible things had happened to her as a kid and she blamed God for not being there. Apparently, she had grown so angry that she hadn’t even smiled since she was four years old.
After our conversation wrapped up, we felt exhausted. We didn’t feel like performing our drama. But we knew God had asked us to in our intercession time for this ministry. So, we stood in front of a small crowd and shared the skit that God had given us in our prayer time. The skit demonstrated how Jesus leads people to help those in need. In one of the scenes, a girl tried to give a pair of shoes to someone in need.
As the skit wrapped up, something amazing happened. A man in the crowd pulled a pair of shoes from his backpack. He turned to a barefooted woman nearby.
“Estos zapatos son para ti,” he said handing the shoes to her.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This man had been so moved by the story of Jesus that he gave his own shoes to a woman in need. Not only that, but this was the same woman who had told us her life story. I hadn’t even realized she was barefoot. Could our skit have been any more perfect? God gave us the perfect scene to match the people we would meet that very night!
My teammates and I gathered around this woman and began praying for her. After a while, one of the staff from YWAM Morelia gently placed her hands on the lady’s cheeks and looked intently into her eyes.
“Do you want to give your life to Jesus?” she asked in Spanish.
“Si, yo quiero,” the lady said.
They prayed together for a long time until suddenly, a huge grin spread across the lady’s face.
“I feel so happy!” she said. “I’ve never experienced joy like this!”
As we thought of her story, our hearts overflowed with happiness. I wanted to shout for joy as I watched years of pent up bitterness melt away.
While this woman laughed and hugged my teammates, I thought about the God who had turned a plan B into a life-changing encounter. A door had closed on one opportunity, only for Him to position us for something bigger than we could’ve hoped for!
Isn’t that just like God? He always has a plan for us amidst the unexpected changes. He’s the God of surprises, the God who delights in divine set-ups. He is the one who works all things together for good for those who love Him. And we get to enjoy the crazy, wonderful joy-ride in partnering with Him as he instills hope in the darkness, infuses joy into sorrow and breathes new life on dry bones.
